چکیده

Nowadays the term monochromatic and heterochromatic (or rainbow, multicolored) subgraphs of an edge colored graph appeared frequently in literature, and many results on this topic have been obtained. In this paper, we survey results on this subject. We classify the results into the following categories: vertex-partitions by monochromatic subgraphs, such as cycles, paths, trees; vertex partition by some kinds of heterochromatic subgraphs; the computational complexity of these partition problems; some kinds of large monochromatic and heterochromatic subgraphs. We have to point out that there are a lot of results of Ramsey type problem on monochromatic and heterochromatic subgraphs. However, it is not our purpose to include them in this survey because this is slightly different from our topics and also contains too large amount of results to deal with together. There are also some interesting results on vertex-colored graphs, but we do not contain them, either.

On monochromatic subgraphs of edge-colored complete graphs

In a red-blue coloring of a nonempty graph, every edge is colored red or blue. If the resulting edge-colored graph contains a nonempty subgraph G without isolated vertices every edge of which is colored the same, then G is said to be monochromatic. For two nonempty graphs G and H without isolated vertices, the monochromatic Ramsey number mr(G,H) of G and H is the minimum integer n such that eve...

Monochromatic subgraphs of 2-edge-colored graphs

Lehel conjectured that for all n, any 2-edge-coloring of Kn admits a partition of the vertex set into a red cycle and a blue cycle. This conjecture led to a significant amount of work on related questions and was eventually proven for all n by Bessy and Thomassé. Balogh, Barát, Gerbner, Gyárfás, and Sárközy conjectured a stronger statement for large n: that if δ(G) > 3n/4, then any 2-edge-color...

Monochromatic and Heterochromatic Subgraph Problems in a Randomly Colored Graph

LetKn be the complete graph with n vertices and c1, c2, · · · , cr be r different colors. Suppose we randomly and uniformly color the edges of Kn in c1, c2, · · · , cr. Then we get a random graph, denoted by K r n. In the paper, we investigate the asymptotic properties of several kinds of monochromatic and heterochromatic subgraphs in K n. Accurate threshold functions in some cases are also obt...

Highly Symmetric Subgraphs of Hypercubes

Two questions are considered, namely (i) How many colors are needed for a coloring of the n-cube without monochromatic quadrangles or hexagons? We show that four colors suffice and thereby settle a problem of Erdos. (ii) Which vertex-transitive induced subgraphs does a hypercube have? An interesting graph has come up in this context: If we delete a Hamming code from the 7-cube, the resulting gr...

Colored Saturation Parameters for Rainbow Subgraphs

Inspired by a 1987 result of Hanson and Toft [Edge-colored saturated graphs, J. Graph Theory 11 (1987), 191–196] and several recent results, we consider the following saturation problem for edge-colored graphs. An edge-coloring of a graph F is rainbow if every edge of F receives a different color. Let R(F ) denote the set of rainbow-colored copies of F . A t-edge-colored graph G is (R(F ), t)-s...
